Cracked or decayed teeth can cause pain, discomfort, decreased confidence and can lead to even further issues in your dental health. Fortunately, dental crowns offer a simple, common way to cover up damaged teeth and prevent more serious issues while offering a natural look. At Schultz Family Dentistry, Dr. Justin Schultz and Dr. Lauren Larson offer the care and experience necessary to help you regain a comfortable, natural-looking smile.

What Are Dental Crowns?

Dental crowns are caps placed over damaged or worn teeth to restore their appearance and capability. These caps are shaped just like natural teeth and are custom-made to fit comfortably around your other teeth. Crowns can be made of porcelain, metal, or ceramic.

Crowns provide a great solution for teeth that have broken or have been affected by decay. They are also used to cover up misshapen or discolored teeth, cover a dental implant, or hold a dental bridge in place. Crowns are discreet and provide a natural-looking replacement for your affected teeth.

What Is the Process for Dental Crowns?

Receiving a dental crown is a multi-step process. The first step is numbing the tooth and the surrounding area using a local anesthetic. Dr. Schultz or Dr. Larson will then reshape the current tooth. Your tooth may require a more involved reshaping or filling, depending on your situation. Once this step is complete, Dr. Schultz or Dr. Larson will take impressions of your tooth and those around it to ensure the crown will fit perfectly on top of the natural tooth.

These impressions will be sent to a lab, where your permanent crown will be created. While the permanent crown is being produced, either Dr. Schultz or Dr. Larson will fit you with a temporary crown. After approximately a week to 10 days, you will be asked to come back to the office so that you may have your permanent crown fitted. This is done using a special cement that will harden to secure the crown in place.

Once the process is complete, you will be responsible for taking care of the crown by maintaining proper dental hygiene.
